Anxiety and Stress

Are you suffering from anxiety and stress? Do you experience constant worry thoughts, chest pains, rapid heart rate, difficulty breathing, sweating, stomach pains, headaches or muscle tension? You are not alone! If so, you are probably experiencing symptoms of anxiety or high stress. In this day of hustle and bustle, being plugged in to technology, never ending to do lists, running from work to home and being pulled in ten different directions at once to meet deadlines, no wonder we are all stressed! Although there have been a rising number of anxiety disorders diagnosed in children and adults over the past decade but the good news is that there is treatment for anxiety disorders and we can help to manage your stress and to lower your symptoms of anxiety.

The type of therapy that is most often recommended for the treatment of anxiety due to its demonstrated effectiveness is cognitive behavioral therapy, although most forms of therapy are well suited to addressing anxiety. Rather than treating symptoms alone, as medications do, psychotherapy aims to identify and address the source of the anxiety. The self-reflective process of therapy helps people to understand, unravel, and transform anxiety and learn self-soothing techniques to use if anxiety flares up again.

We use a variety of therapeutic techniques to assist you with managing your stress and anxiety and work together to create a treatment plan customized for you. We will explore what has worked for you in the past and what may no longer be working for you now. By incorporating evidenced based treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy and solution focused therapy, we can work collaboratively to explore what beliefs and behaviors might be getting in the way of reaching your goals and achieving what you care about in your life.

Because anxiety can interfere with relationships, sleeping patterns, eating habits, work, school, and routine activities, anxiety is one of the most common reasons people seek therapy, and effective therapy can significantly reduce or eliminate symptoms associated with anxiety in a relatively short time, allowing a person to resume regular activities and regain a sense of control. Although people may not be able to identify the cause of their anxiety, after attending a few therapy sessions, many people are able to pinpoint the source and a therapist can help a person work on those deeper concerns. We may suggest lifestyle adjustments to help relieve anxiety such as meditation, group therapy, stress-management and relaxation techniques, self-care and exercise.

We understand that starting therapy may be scary for you and you may not know what to expect. During the first visit we will review your concerns and take a thorough history to learn more about you and how we can best help you with your stress and anxiety. The therapy relationship is an important one, so it is imperative that you feel a sense of connection with your therapist in order to maximize success in therapy. We will create a care plan that works for you and make goals in our first session so that you can track improvements and we will decide on how often we will meet for our sessions.
